Spider Veins - Telangiectasias and who is Affected by Spider Veins
Telangiectasias, or spider veins are very small dilated superficial veins. These veins are close to the surface of the skin, and are blue, or red. Aptly called spider veins, because they look like a spiders’ web, they can cover a lot of skin area, or merely appear on the face or cheeks. Just as with varicose veins, they are caused by venous insufficiency, and direct blood pooling. Leaky valves, heredity, and hormonal changes can predispose one to spider veins. This is rather a common problem, and both men and women are affected by it.
Avoiding sun exposure, and using a good sunscreen one can avoid getting spider veins on the face. Exercise; controlling one’s weight, not crossing legs at the knees when sitting, and avoiding tight constricting clothing will help avoid spider veins. People with varicose veins, usually have spider veins.
Prolonged sitting and or standing should be avoided. When standing, shift your weight from leg to leg, and when sitting for more than 30 minutes, stand up and walk around for a few minutes before sitting again.
Telangiectasias are, medically insignificant but cosmetically important, and should be taken care of for improved quality of life, and self esteem.
