EVLT Laser Surgery for Varicose Veins
EVLT or endovenous laser therapy is a minimally invasive, non-surgical way to get rid of your varicose veins. EVLT is a new alternative to older, more traditional methods of vein surgeries. There is no scarring, and the likelihood of veins coming back is very low.
A thorough exam is carried out using a Doppler ultrasound to ascertain the condition of the saphenous vein. Most candidates for the procedure have large bulging veins, above and below the knees. Before the procedure, you will be given a local anesthetic, and then a small needle will be placed into the greater saphenous vein near your knee. This is the longest vein in your body and runs from your ankle to your groin area. This vein is usually the cause of your varicose veins, because it has many offshoots, which become painful, and bulging. Using ultrasound guidance a small wire is guided into the vein, so that the laser tip can be placed in the vein. As the laser is withdrawn it closes the vein. The laser literally obliterates the varicose vein.
The procedure takes less than an hour, there is minimal post-procedure discomfort, and you can resume your normal activities that day. The best thing is that the painful symptoms of your varicose veins are immediately relieved, without the need for painful surgery.
Those with spider veins should consider Sclerotherapy.
